SLR Launches Book Giveaway Contest

Today sparks the launch of Sable Lit Reviews’ observance of Hispanic Heritage Month with a Book Giveaway contest sponsored by Hachette Book Group.

The contest runs from September 15th through October 15th. Enter to win 8 of Hachette’s bestselling literary contributions to the Hispanic Culture.

Up to five winners will be selected after the contest concludes on October 15th to win a copy of the following books:

Contest Rules:

On four Tuesdays during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 16th, Sept 23th, Sept. 30, and Oct. 7) a question related to Hispanic culture in media and/or literature will be posted on Sable Lit Reviews’ main page. Clues will be provided as well as the answer in a scrambled form. At least one of the four questions must be answered correctly and be provided by 11:59 p.m. PST on October 15th to be eligible for the book giveaway. Those answering more than one question will have increased chance of winning in direct proportion to the number of questions answered correctly. Email your answer(s) in the body of an email and send it using the form at the bottom of the page as winners will be notified by email reply.

A maximum of five winners will be selected. In the event that more than five contestants are eligible to win, then the five winners will be selected at random from the pool of eligible contestants. Winners will be notified between October 16th and October 24th. Winners will be required to provide their mailing address (no P.O. Boxes will be accepted) no later than 11:59 p.m PST October 31st in order to take receipt of the books.

So get ready to unscramble the answers to find some major contributors to Hispanic Culture and Media in order to claim your chance to add these great books to your personal library.

Don’t Quit Poem

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must; but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow;
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown..
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit;
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

3 obstacles

It was 9th grade AP English and when the teacher was critiquing my poem, which he didn’t relate to, he said the following:

”You will always struggle against 3 obstacles. You are black, you are intelligent, and you are female.”

He didn’t intend it to stop me, he meant it to empower me. You must first acknowledge the hurdles before you can clear them.

Happy New Year 2008!

Despite staying in with a good book and watching the flames crackle, snap and dance in my backyard firepit as the winds rustle through newly planted 5 gallon trees, I am drawn to what these visuals represent. Earth, Wind, Fire, smell, and touch. Moscato on my breath and budding ideas of what I want the Sable Lit Lounge to be swirl in my head. Is it just the wine and the fiery anbiance? No. It’s the nature of the fire burning back to smoldering embers only to spark again with tremendous furor.

That will be the essence of the Sable Lit Lounge.

Sable Lit Lounge: A showcase for African American and Multicultural Literature both past and present. A source that points to where we are going and where we’ve come from. A stage to honor those who set the foundation of our successes and a microphone for those who pledge to carry the torch.

A sounding board for all things that we affect and that affect us.

The incubator for what will become The Sable Lit Press.
